- Ali was born in Bristol, to her parents David and Joan. Her family moved to the district of Gloucestershire when Ali was young. There, she was raised on the family’s dairy farm near Wotton-under-Edge. Ali’s parents moved away from the farm and into the town after their retirement. Joan passed away in April 2013, after suffering from cancer and dementia.

- After university, Ali began her career in London as a designer swimwear saleswoman at the British luxury department store, Harvey Nichols. Her most successful sale was a costume worth £2000.
- After working at Harvey Nichols, Ali decided it was time to leave the world of retail, but before she could pursue her dreams of working in broadcasting and journalism, she spent time in Bath training to become a bus driver.
- She eventually decided bus driving was not her calling and went on to work at the BBC Television Center as an assistant to the Director-General.
- Unfulfilled by the job, Vowles returned to West England and landed a job as a broadcast journalist.
- She initially took a job as a community unit member at the BBC network in Bath but soon moved to Bristol where she became a morning presenter for Radio Bristol.
