Annie Baker is a young American playwright who has won a Pulitzer Prize for her work.

Early Life, Education, Parents and Family :

• Annie was born on May 6, 1981, in Boston Massachusetts.
• She grew up in nearby Amherst, in a single parent family.
• Parents : Her father, Conn Nugent, worked in the administration offices for the Five Colleges Consortium, and was reportedly an alcoholic. This led to her mother, Linda Baker, filing for divorce.
• Her mother achieved a PHD while Annie was still young, and worked as a Psychologist.
• Baker has one brother, named Benjamin.
• Education : She was a student at the New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where she earnt a Bachelor of Arts.
• From there, she went on to attend the Brooklyn College, where she earnt her Master’s degree in fine arts and playwriting.

• Baker’s first job out of university was working as a guest-handler for a television network. The first show she was involved with for the network was The Bachelor.
• She worked there while writing plays on the side until 2008 when she was selected to participate in the Sundance Institute Theater Lab.
• She also held a MacDowell Colony Fellow, from 2009 to 2014.
• In March of 2013, Annie worked on a play named The Flick, which was about the humdrum life of 3 movie theatre ushers. For this play, she earned a Pulitzer Prize in 2014.
• Some of her other plays include Body Awareness from 2008, Circle Mirror Transformation from 2009, and Uncle Vanya, which is from 2012.
• Her style has been labeled as the love child of quirkiness and sincerity.
• In 2014, she was selected to become a part of the Signature Theatre’s “Residency Five Program,” which the theatre uses to allow playwrights the opportunity to put on three big productions over five years with their backing.
• Her first play, John, premiered in 2015 to positive reviews, and her second play under the program “The Antipodes” is expected to premiere in 2017.

• When first starting out with her playwrighting career, Annie refused to speak to the media, something she has said stemmed from the shyness she has had since a young age.
• As she progressed in her career, she understood the importance of involving the media, although she is careful to keep her private life private.
• Her work has earned her many famous fans, the most outspoken of which is actress Brie Larson. Larson labeled Baker’s work as ‘very needed’ for the current state of the world. The two reportedly became fast friends after meeting at one of The Flick’s productions.
