Introduction :

Sanjukata Parashar is widely recognized as the woman at the forefront of India’s battle against Bodo militants in Assam.

Serving as an Indian Police Service officer since 2006, Parashar was appointed as the Assistant Commandant in Makum in 2008, and was soon leading the fight to end clashes between Bodo militants and Bangladeshi immigrants in Udalguri.

So exceptional has she been in her work that she was wrongfully credited as being the first woman from Assam to succeed in joining the IPS. But judging by her achievements, it is no wonder that Parashar has received such attention.

• PHQ, Guwahati : From September 2016

Education and UPSC :

Parashar completed her Class X from Holy Child School, Guwahati and her Class XII from Army School, Narangi.

Later, she graduated with a Political Science Honors from Indraprastha College for Women in New Delhi.

She also successfully pursued a Master’s degree in International Relations at the School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). With US-ASEAN relations as the focus of her studies, she went on to earn an M.Phil and later a Ph.D in US foreign policy.

Her proper title, Dr. Sanjukta Parashar, IPS, is truly well deserved.

Parashar has proven herself a capable leader in the IPS. Countless times she has placed her life on the line as she leads her team into the forests of Assam to counter against separatist insurgents. She was credited for single handily taking down 16 militants during performance of her duties.

Service from the Heart :

Despite all her achievements as an armed officer of the law, Parashar has also shown a soft side that has won the hearts of many across the country. She was a regular visitor to the camps for displaced people in the region during the height of the conflict and participated in the distribution of much needed relief.

Leading from the front :

She is also a vocal advocate for road safety; known for offering toffees to motorcycle riders who wear helmets. Parashar says that only criminals should fear her, and that despite numerous threats to her life from NDFB militants, she will not back down from performing her duties.

Loving Mother and Wife :

Whenever she can take leave from her demanding work schedule, Sanjukta Parashar takes on the role of mother to her young son and wife to her husband Shri Puru Gupta, an IAS officer posted in Assam. She often takes as long as two months before she is able to see her family, but Parashar accepts that as part of her work.

In a country where women face rampant discrimination, Sanjukta Parashar is an inspiration to all for her commitment to serving the people of India; even in the face of constant danger.
